Lockheed Martin Begins $51 Million Expansion in Fort Worth, Texas

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (Fort Worth, Texas), subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) (Bethesda, Maryland), has begun construction on a $51 million expansion in Fort Worth, Texas, which will enable the company to apply paint and stealth coatings to the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter for the United States government.

Working with Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) as the architect and engineering firm of record, Lockheed is constructing an 82,000 square-foot paint and coatings building as well as a pair of 20,000 square-foot utilities buildings that will house two 2,000-ton chillers and a single 200,000 lbs/hr boiler.

Construction on the project began with the initial building work on the utilities buildings in the winter of 2006, while the main building construction has begun this month. The installation of equipment is expected to begin in the early summer of 2007 and the overall project is slated for completion in the fall of 2008.

The multi-service, multi-mission F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will be manufactured for the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, as well as the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The F-35 has been designed to provide an affordable, lethal, survivable and supportable stealthy tactical aircraft to these diverse defense agencies within the two governments.
