Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 598-megawatt (MW) Coal Unit 01 at King Power Station, located in Bayport, Minnesota, was shut down on the morning of Tuesday, November 19, due to a faulty control valve. The plant is owned by Northern States Power (Minneapolis, Minnesota), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL).
Plant officials said that they are investigating the cause of the trip and that they will attempt to make the necessary repairs as soon as possible. They also said that they are hoping to address another issue in a couple of days related to a feedwater heater that will require the unit to be offline. Officials would like to get the unit back online before it is again taken offline. They will perform a cleaning during that time as well.
Officials said that they have a leak in one of the feedwater heaters and they had initially planned for the unit to be shut down on Thursday, November 21, to address the problem. They met throughout Tuesday to determine whether or not the unit will remain offline to complete all repairs or start back up. At this time, no final decision has been made.
The King Coal Plant has one generating unit, which began operations in 1987, and a total generating capacity of 598 MW when at full load.
