Nineteen New Biofuel Plants Came Online During the 2006 Calendar Year

According to data extracted from Industrial Info’s plant database, 19 new biofuel plants including both ethanol and biodiesel production facilities went into operation during the 2006 calendar year. This added over 523 million gallons of capacity to the North American ethanol market through ten new operational plants and over 90 million gallons of biodiesel capacity annually from nine new biodiesel plants.

Patriot Biofuels in Stuttgart, Arkansas, commissioned a 10 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant and is already looking to expand the plant in 2007, as more biodiesel markets open up in the region.

Front Range Energy, LLC completed construction on its 40 million-gallon per year ethanol plant in Windsor, Colorado in June of 2006, and is now in full production mode. The plant was designed by ICM.

Mid Atlantic Biodiesel began producing biodiesel out of its new plant in Clayton, Delaware, in August 2006. The plant has a nameplate production capacity of 5 million gallons per year of biodiesel.

Clinton County Bio Energy commissioned a 10 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant in Clinton, Iowa, in October 2006 and is now running at full capacity. Also in Iowa, Horizon Ethanol, LLC, a Brion plant, commissioned a 60 million-gallon per year plant in Jewell in March of 2006. Three additional Iowa plants went into production last year as well. Hawkeye Renewables, LLC (100MM gal/yr), Frontier Ethanol, LLC (60MM gal/yr), and Lincolnway Energy Coop (50MM gal/yr) all commissioned plants in May of 2006.

Things were relatively slow in Kansas considering the state ranks in the top 10 of corn producing states. Only two projects became operational in 2006. Prairie Horizon Agri Energy’s 40 million-gallon per year plant in Phillipsburg and Cornhusker Energy brought online its 42 million-gallon per year plant in early January.

Missouri only had one biofuel plant start-up, as Missouri Ethanol, LLC commissioned its 45 million-gallon per year plant in Laddonia in September.

A small one million-gallon per year biodiesel plant started up under the ownership of Piedmont Biofuels, Incorporated in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

And in Canada, Biox completed construction of a 23 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant in Hamilton, Ontario and Suncor Energy started up a 52 million-gallon per year plant in St. Clair, Ontario and is already talking about doubling the current capacity. Husky Lloydminster Ethanol also went in to operation in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. This is a 34 million-gallon per year plant.

Agra Biofuels, Incorporated started up a small 3 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant in Middletown, Pennsylvania, as well as Keystone’s commissioning of an even smaller one million-gallon per year plant in Camp Hill.

Memphis Biofuels, LLC also had a successful start-up of its new biodiesel plant in Memphis back in September. The plant’s nameplate capacity is 36 million gallons per year.

And in Texas, the much publicized Pacific Biodiesel Texas, makers of BioWillie biodiesel, successfully started up a 2 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant in Hillsboro, Texas.

Expect to see new plants coming online throughout the coming months in 2007 as close to 100 new plants currently under construction go into operation and more move from engineering into the construction phase.
