Northern Border Pipeline Plans New Compressor Station in Iowa, Expands Regional Natural Gas Capacity

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Northern Border Pipeline Company (Omaha, Nebraska), a subsidiary of Northern Border Partners LP (NYSE:NBP)(Omaha, Nebraska), is planning to expand its pipeline capacity from Harper, Iowa, to Chicago, Illinois, by approximately 130 million cubic feet per day of natural gas, which is roughly fifteen percent over its present capacity.

To achieve this new capacity, Northern Border plans to construct a new natural gas compressor station in Johnson County, Iowa, and make other minor modifications to existing facilities. The new compressor station will be designated Compressor Station 16 and will utilize a single 16,000 horsepower GE electric motor coupled with a Rolls Royce compressor package. This will mark the second to last compressor station for which Northern Border has already secured the land and many preliminary permits. Compressor Station 15 will be the last to be used, when capacity constraints on the pipeline justify its construction, as well. Compressor Station 15 will be in the projected size range of 10,000 to 18,000 horsepower, utilizing an electric drive motor, and will be located in Poweshiek County, Iowa.

Northern Border expects the expansion project to cost approximately $20 million and estimates an annual revenue stream of $4.6 million from the extra capacity. Northern Border expects to receive its final FERC approvals and begin construction on the expansion project in the summer of 2005, with a completion and in-service date set for the spring of 2006.
