Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Wolf Creek Nuclear Station, which is located in Burlington, Kansas, shut down its 1,160-megawatt (MW) unit on March 8 for a mid-cycle maintenance inspection. The station is operated by Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation and is owned by Westar Energy (NYSE:WR) (Topeka, Kansas) (47%), Kansas City Power and Light Company (47%) and Kansas Electric Power Cooperative (6%).
The unit's restart has been delayed due to an investigation of its coolers. Sources told Industrial Info that the coolers must be investigated for leaks before the unit can return online. Officials have not yet detected any leaks or holes, but the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will not allow the unit to return online until a thorough analysis has been completed.
The unit is projected to return online Tuesday, May 6, if there are no additional delays.
The Wolf Creek Nuclear Station has one generating unit of 1,160 megawatts when at full-load capacity. Westar Energy is the largest electric energy provider in Kansas.
