Portugal's EDP to Dismantle 750-Megawatt Carregado Thermoelectric Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Europe (Galway, Ireland)--Energias de Portugal Sociedade Anónima (PINK:EDPFY) (EDP) (Lisbon, Portugal), Portugal's largest utility company, has decided to decommission and dismantle its 750-megawatt (MW) Carregado oil-fired power plant. EDP's businesses in Portugal, Spain, and Brazil cover electrical generation and distribution, natural gas distribution and renewable energies.

Carregado was in operation for more than 40 years until last January, when it ceased to produce electricity for the national grid. The power station consists of four 125-MW Alstom steam turbines that drive 156-megavolt-ampere generators from the same manufacturer, plus two 125-MW Alstom turbine and generator sets with the same characteristics. The steam turbines are fed by two Mague boilers with a combined output of 2.16 million pounds of steam per hour.

A public tender should be held by the first quarter of next year in order to choose the company or group that will conduct the project engineering and execution. The agreement should be a turnkey contract for the decommissioning, demolition and environmental requalification of the Carregado power plant and its site, similarly to EDP's Barreiro Power Station, the decomissioning and demolition of which was tendered last year and is already well under way.

Decommissioning work will include the removal of residual fuel-oil that is still onsite; the cleaning of waste from other oils, fuels and chemicals that were used during the time of operation; and the disabling of electrical connections.

Demolition activities will include the dismantlement of large structures, such as oil and steam pipelines; an engine room; boilers; steam turbines; a pumping station; and storage tanks. The separation of all the materials from this activity and their removal off site also will be part of the contractor's responsibilities.

Environmental requalification will mainly involve running a program for land remediation and landscape restoration.

The execution of this project should begin by mid-2012, and it is expected to take about two and a half years, with completion at the end of 2014.

The old Carregado Power Station is on the same premises that the 1,560-MW single-shaft, combined-cycle Ribatejo Power Plant, which has been in operation since 2005.
