Power, Biofuels Lead Oregon and Washington's 2012 Planned Project Starts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Often overshadowed by their West Coast neighbor California, the states of Washington and Oregon boast more than $55 billion in active projects that are in the planning, engineering or construction stage. Approximately $7.5 billion of these projects are planned to begin construction in the two states by the end of this year.

In Oregon, the Alternative Fuels Industry leads the way in terms of project value. Inland Pacific Energy Center LLC (Nyssa, Oregon) plans to break ground on two biofuels complexes in the state in the second half of this year. Each facility is planned to have a 138 million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant and a 96 million-gallon-per-year biodiesel complex. Inland Pacific expects to receive funding and permit approvals for both facilities this summer.

The Power Industry is king in Washington, with more than $1.7 billion in projects planned to kick off in the state this year. Chief among these is Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) 650-megawatt (MW) Phase II combined-cycle addition at the Grays Harbor Energy Center in Elma, Washington. The original 650-MW station began operating in 2008. Construction of the new two-unit addition is expected to begin in the middle of this year and be completed in late 2014. The project has an estimated total investment value of $500 million.

In addition, $347 million in power transmission projects are planned to kick off in both states this year, including Bonneville Power Administration's (BPA) (Portland, Oregon) 40-mile, overhead high-voltage transmission line in Washington. The $99 million will run from Garfield County to Walla County. BPA hopes to begin construction this summer. Information on these and other projects is available in Industrial Info's North American Project Database.
