Seaboard Foods Commissions Biodiesel Plant in Oklahoma

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--High Plains Bioenergy (Guymon, Oklahoma), a subsidiary of Seaboard Foods Corporation (Shawnee Mission, Kansas), is going through the plant-commissioning process this week on the company's new biodiesel plant in Guymon. A grand-opening ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled this week on April 24 to mark the plant's official opening.

Plant operators are currently testing equipment and running small production batches in anticipation of being at full capacity later this week. At full capacity, the plant will produce 30 million gallons of biodiesel annually and will have multi-feedstock processing capabilities but will mainly run animal fats and tallow generated from Seaboard's huge hog slaughtering operation next door to the plant. A pre-treatment system prepares the fats for processing before feedstock enters the plant's transesterification reactor.

The plant utilizes Desmet Ballestra's biodiesel processing technology and was built by Wanzek Construction (Fargo, North Dakota). Construction on the estimated $40 million plant started in September 2007 and took eight months to complete.

The plant is located at 3300 East 32nd Street in Guymon in the Panhandle region of the state. Once fully operational, the plant will employ about 30 people and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

High Plains is the first large-scale biodiesel plant operating in Oklahoma. Tulsa Biofuels, the only other biodiesel producer in the state, operates a small-scale, 750,000-gallon-per-year, recycled grease feedstock plant in Tulsa that has been operating since December 2007.
