Shaw Group Wins Contract for ExxonMobil's Castle Peak Environmental Upgrade

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Stone & Webster Incorporated (Hong Kong), a subsidiary of the Shaw Group (NYSE:SGR ) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), was awarded the contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for an environmental upgrade project at the 4,120-megawatt (MW) Castle Peak Power Station (Tuen Mun, Hong Kong).

The coal-fired power plant consists of 1,400-MW A units with four 350-MW steam turbine/generators/boilers; and 2,720-MW B units with four 680-MW steam turbine/generators/boilers. All units became operational between 1982 and 1990. Castle Peak was constructed as a coal-fired plant, but some units were modified to be capable of burning gas and oil.

Stone & Webster is in the design and engineering phase of installing four wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers onto the B units, which include four Babcock & Wilcox boilers. Construction is scheduled in spring 2008 with completion of the first unit by mid-2009.

Castle Peak power plant is 60% owned by ExxonMobil Energy Limited (Hong Kong), and 40% by China Light Power Hong Kong Limited.
