Sierra Pacific Power Completes $421 Million Expansion Project at Tracy Generating Station in Nevada

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sierra Pacific Power Company (Reno, Nevada), a subsidiary of Sierra Pacific Resources (NYSE:SRP) (Reno), has completed construction on a $421 million, 514-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Frank A. Tracy generating station in Sparks, Nevada, and has begun start-up testing. Construction on the project started in May 2006 and was completed earlier this year. Full commercial operation is set to commence next month.

The project consisted of adding a 2-on-1 combined-cycle power block to the facility. The expansion included two 172 MW natural-gas-fired GE Energy MS7001FA combustion turbine generators, two Nooter/Erikson heat recovery steam generators and a single 170 MW GE Energy air-cooled condensing steam turbine generator. The new expansion will have the highest thermal efficiency of any generating plant in Sierra Pacific's system, and will use about one-third less natural gas than existing generating units.

State-of-the-art air emissions-reduction technology was also featured in the new expansion, including selective catalytic reduction for the control of nitrogen oxide emissions and the use of catalytic oxidation to control carbon monoxide emissions. Once operational, the new project will be used to help supply energy for northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe area of California.

CH2M HILL (Englewood, Colorado) provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the project, and Lockwood Greene Constructors (Spartanburg, South Carolina), a wholly owned subsidiary of CH2M HILL, acted as the general contractor.
