Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In a move to reduce the carbon footprint of Singapore's Jurong Island petrochemical hub, Sembcorp Industries (SPX:U96.SI) (Singapore) is constructing a $198.4 million energy-from-waste plant. The facility will use industrial and commercial waste to produce steam for companies near the plant, which is in the Sakra area of the island.

Two boilers will produce a combined 140 tons of steam per hour and will cut greenhouse gas emissions about 50%.

The plant is scheduled for completion in 2016 . It will enable Sembcorp to supply 33% of its customers' steam needs by using eco-friendly alternative fuel. The plant will use 1,000 tons of industrial and commercial waste, collected daily by the company's solid waste management operations, as fuel. It also will reduce disposal costs for waste it collects.

"This project will reduce disposal costs for our solid waste management operations and improve synergies between Sembcorp's energy and solid waste management businesses," said Ng Meng Poh, the executive vice president of Sembcorp Utilities.

Scheduled for completion this month is another Jurong Island power project, the 60-megawatt (MW) Tembusu coal and biomass fired cogen project, which will add capacity to the existing 100-MW plant. The $65 million plant is to be located in the Tembusu industrial zone. It is owned by Huaneng Power International (NYSE:HNP) (Beijing, China) and Marubeni (OTC:MARUY) (Tokyo, Japan), and it is being constructed by the utilities subsidiary of Tuas Power Limited (Singapore).
