Six Years in the Making, Cascade Grain Finally Begins Construction on Largest Fuel Ethanol Plant on the West Coast

Reported by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). After spending six exhausting years in pre-development, Cascade Grain Products, LLC (Saint Helens, Oregon) has begun construction on the largest fuel ethanol plant on the West Coast. The company successfully secured financing for the $150 plus million project and is moving forward with pre-construction activities at the site located in Clatskanie, Oregon.

Plans are to construct a mammoth 113 million-gallon per year fuel ethanol plant to meet the growing need for the renewable fuel on the West Coast. The dry mill plant will utilize 60 million bushels of corn feedstock annually to produce ethanol and distillers dried grains. The company selected Delta T Corporation (Williamsburg, Virginia) to provide the licensed technology for the process and JH Kelly, LLC Ethanol, a joint venture between TIC (The Industrial Company) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) and JH Kelly Construction (Longview, Washington), will build the plant.

Construction is expected to take about fourteen to sixteen months to construct, and once in operation, the plant will be the largest of its kind on the West Coast. Primary markets for the ethanol will be California, Oregon and Washington and excess capacity will be marketed through Alaska, Hawaii and Pacific Rim destinations.

Ethanol production facilities have been slow in developing on the West Coast, however, more plants are in the works. There are four plants in California, five plants in Oregon and two plants in Washington that are in the pre-construction phase and the industry is expected to continue the westward growth trend of fuel ethanol production.

IIR's Ethanol Production Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging synthetic fuels market. This database covers 82 ethanol plants currently in operation and over 130 plants under development. It also covers nine biodiesel plants and eighteen biodiesel plants under development.
