Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 147-megawatt (MW) Grant Plains power windfarm began operations this month in Oklahoma, marking the third Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia) wind facility in the Sooner State.
Located in Grant County, the new windfarm operates alongside its sister facility, Grant Wind, with which it shares an operations and maintenance team and building.
Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia) managed the project construction, which began in the first quarter of this year. IEA Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives, LLC (Indianapolis, Indiana) was the engineering, procurement and construction contractor. Sentry Electrical Group Incorporated (Lawrenceville, Georgia) was the electrical contractor.
Earlier this year, Southern Company bought the Grant Plains windfarm project Apex Clean Energy. Southern Company also purchased the 299-MW Kay Wind and the 151-MW Grand Wind facilities.
Apex Clean Energy and Southern Company signed a long-term service agreement (LTSA) for Apex to continue to provide operations and maintenance for the already operational Kay Wind facility. Apex would also provide the operations and maintenance for the Grant Wind and Grant Plains wind sites.
Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) currently has a warranty in place for the maintenance of the turbines at all three windfarms. The Grant Wind facility houses 64 SWT-2.3-101 Siemens wind turbines.
Southern Power now owns more than 2,400 MW of renewable energy.
