Southern Company Kay County Wind Project Adds 300 MW to Grid
Southern Company's subsidiary, Southern Power, announced the beginning of operations for the 300 megawatt (MW)-Kay Wind power project located in Kay County, Oklahoma.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Southern Company's (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia) subsidiary, Southern Power (Birmingham, Alabama), announced the beginning of operations for a 300-megawatt (MW) wind power project located in Kay County, Oklahoma. The project, with a total investment value of $600 million, was completed in mid-December and comprises 130 Siemens SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines.
Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) performed engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. Southern Power purchased the project from Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia). Apex Clean Energy will take on daily operations and maintenance under a long-term service agreement.
Another Oklahoma wind project, Grant Wind, is expected to be acquired by Southern Power and begin commercial operations in the first quarter of 2016. Located in Grant County, the project consists of 65 Siemens SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines and will create an output of 150 MW.
A third wind project, Grant Plains Windfarm, also to be acquired by Southern Power upon completion, will start operations in the third quarter of 2016. It is located next to the Grant Wind power project. Construction began this month. It consists of 65 Siemens 2.3-MW wind turbines for a total output of 150 MW.
