U.S. Bread & Bakery Project Expenditures Expected to Surpass $1 Billion by Mid-Year

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The bread and bakery industry is pouring a lot of dough into manufacturing and distribution assets. Project expenditures in the U.S. and Canada to build new plants, expand existing operations and upgrade facilities are expected to surpass $1 billion by mid-2014. Industrial Info has identified more than 70 projects within the segment at U.S. facilities that have standard industrial classification (sic) codes of 2051, 2052 and 2053. The current cumulative investment value of all those projects is more than $990 million. Project values range from $500,000 to $100 million.
The largest project is a plan by Kings Hawaiian to double the size of a 110,000-square-foot baking facility in Georgia. The expansion has an investment value of $100 million and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2016. Pepperidge Farm has started construction on a $93 million expansion in Willard, Ohio, that is slated for completion at the end of the year.
Project owners include the likes of Pepperidge Farm (Norwalk, Connecticut), Flowers Foods Incorporated (NYSE:FLO) (Thomasville, Georgia), Bimbo Bakeries USA (Horsham, Pennsylvania), Hostess Foods LLC (Kansas City, Missouri) and Interbake Foods LLC (Richmond, Virginia). Bimbo shows project expenditures of $167 million from 17 projects.
Grassroot construction activity is tied to $367 million in expenditures for eight new bakery facilities. Bimbo is building a $75 million bread and buns facility in Pennsylvania that is scheduled for startup this spring. In another development, Pine Hill Fresh Foods is planning a $10 million project in New York that includes a 40,000-square-foot building and new equipment for the production of bread and rolls.
