Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Gulf Coast States, which include the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, have approximately $69.8 billion in projects planned to kick off in 2013. While there will be some project fallout, the number represents a significant amount of projects that are in the planning and engineering stages and are currently planned to kick off construction after January 1, 2013.
Texas, with 576 projects valued at $33.1 billion, leads the Gulf Coast in both the number and value of projects. Texas is followed by Louisiana, which has 286 projects planned to kick off in 2013, valued at $24.9 billion.
The Power Industry, with $15.9 billion in planned projects, leads the states in terms of project value.
The types of Power Industry projects vary by state. For example, Texas, with its wide open spaces, is heavy in windfarm activity, while we are seeing some solar activity in Florida, as well as a large power transmission project and a nuclear uprate project in the state.
In Florida, Progress Energy Florida Incorporated (Lake Mary, Florida) is planning to begin construction in late 2013 on the 200-mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line from Levy County to Hernando County. The massive project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $3 billion. Dillard Smith Construction Company (Palmetto, Florida) has been named general contractor on the project.
Along the Texas Gulf Coast, Pattern Energy Group (Houston, Texas) is gearing up to begin construction on Phase II of the Gulf Wind Windfarm near Sarita, Texas. The 280-megawatt first phase of the project was begun in 2008 and began commercial operations in early 2009. Phase II, which is scheduled to kick off in the fourth quarter of next year, will add 400 megawatts of power. Phase III could possibly occur after the completion of the second phase.
