The $75 million investment, which will add 300,000 square feet to the facility, will be designated for frozen and refrigerated foods and will feature multi-temperature zones. Wegmans anticipates construction could start in the first half of 2010, with the facility becoming fully operational in late 2011.

Pre-construction activities, including the selection of engineering and construction firms and equipment suppliers, will begin this summer and continue through next year.

Wegman's opened the 125,000-square-foot facility in 2004 and added a 300,000-square-foot grocery distribution building in 2005. At full build-out, the 100-acre site will consist of a full-line distribution center, office, employee amenity building and security building. The distribution center is largely run by wireless real-time information technology, including computerized tracking with laptops and label printers installed on forklifts and voice-activated selection. One section of the facility, devoted to slow-moving items, has racks and mechanical cranes, with the majority of the groceries in pallets on the floor with no racks.
