The facility had been in production since May 2006. It has been operated and managed by Renewable Energy Group (Ames, Iowa). In February of this year, the nearly 600 Western Iowa Energy members voted down a purchase offer by Renewable Energy Group. The board of directors was in favor of the acquisition.

The Wall Lake production facility produced 30 million gallons annually and employed 30 people. Half of the employees have been laid off indefinitely. The remaining staff will ensure the plant is maintained for safety purposes.

The facility is on South Center Street, in Sac County, approximately 120 miles northwest of Des Moines, Iowa.
