Neste Oil Starts Construction on Europe's Largest Biodiesel Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Neste Oil Corporation (HEL:NES1V) (Espoo, Finland) has started construction of the largest biodiesel plant in Europe at the Port of Rotterdam in The Netherlands. The company announced last week that the first foundation stone was laid to mark the construction of the estimated $1 billion-plus plant. When completed in late 2010, the plant will have the capacity of producing 800,000 metric tons of biodiesel from palm oil, rapeseed oil and animal fat waste streams.

The plant is being built by design-build contractor Technip KIT SpA (Rome, Italy) and is expected to take 16 months to complete. The Rotterdam plant is the fourth facility for Neste and the company's second plant outside of Finland. Neste's first overseas facility, in Singapore, is currently under construction and will produce 800,000 metric tons per year of biodiesel, as well, when complete in 2010.

The Port of Rotterdam plant has access to excellent distribution infrastructure. The facility also represents a big step forward in reaching Europe's target of having 10% of renewables in transportation fuels.
