Siemens Consolidates Iraq Power Plant and Transmission Control Contracts

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) is winning its share of contracts as Iraq's power sector continues to rehabilitate and expand its power generation potential. Iraq's Ministry of Electricity has awarded Siemens a contract to supply the control and instrumentation system, field equipment and steam turbine generator spare parts for the power plant at Al Mussaib, the country's largest.

The scope of supply includes new rotating elements for the four 320-megawatt (MW) steam turbines, generator rotors and the complete instrumentation and controls system, which will give the plant improved output and increased efficiency when it is commissioned in 2013.

The new contract comes after Siemens rehabilitated the control systems in Unit 2 in 2009 and Unit 1 in 2010.

The company also has signed two separate contracts with the Ministry for Gas for insulated switchgear (GIS) substations, as part of the ministry's plans to upgrade is 132-kilovolt (kV) power transmission network.

The first contract covers the supply and execution of civil and supervision works on six 132/33 substations at various locations in the country. The second contract covers a further six 132/33 kV substations on a turnkey basis. The substation contracts are scheduled for completion by October 2013.

Siemens also performed the renovation of the control system in the Al Hartha power station near Basrah in 2010, which had been destroyed by fire.
