Researched by Industrial Info Resources Europe (Galway, Ireland)--RWE npower (Swindon, England) has completed construction and moved into the commissioning phase at its new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant near Pembroke in western Wales, U.K.

The Pembroke Power Station is a natural gas-fuelled, compact industrial plant. Natural gas for the plant will be supplied from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Milford Haven. Pembroke Power Station comprises five generating units, each of 424 megawatts (MW), with the ability to generate power for about 3.5 million homes.

Three of the station's units are in the hot commissioning stage, with commercial operations due to begin in the third quarter of this year. Commissioning is being performed by Alstom S.A. (ENX:ALO) (Paris, France), which is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project. The scope of work performed by Alstom includes plant engineering; global procurement and supply; civil, electrical and mechanical construction; and the commissioning of the power station. In addition, Alstom also supplied five GT26, single-shaft gas turbines, each with a sequential dry low NOx (DLN) combustion system. Other equipment includes five drum-type, heat-recovery steam generators; five STF30C steam turbines with axial exhaust; and five TOPGAS turbo-generators.

With a total generating capacity of 2,188 MW and thermal efficiency of 60%, Pembroke will be the largest and the most efficient CCGT power plant in the U.K. The new £1 billion (US$1.56 billion) plant was constructed on a site formerly occupied by an oil-fired power station. The former plant was built between 1965 and 1968; with a rated capacity of 2,000 MW, it was one of the largest power stations of its kind in Europe.

Pembroke follows RWE's 1,650-MW CCGT plant at Staythorpe, in Nottinghamshire, which began commercial operations at the end of 2010. The two CCGT power stations will replace several plants, including Didcot A and Tilbury coal-fired power plants, which will are expected to be taken off the U.K. grid by 2015.
