Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Mexican utility Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City) completed a refueling outage on May 6 for Unit 1 at its Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant, located at Alto Lucero, in the state of Veracruz. The outage began on March 23. Major repairs on the high-pressure section of the turbine also were conducted.
CFE is scheduled to begin a 36-day refueling outage at Unit 2 on June 4.
The nuclear plant has two 810-megawatt (MW), extraction-condensing HP/LP steam turbines built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (OTC:MHVYF) (MHI) (Tokyo, Japan), with boiling water reactors (BWR-F) built by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Incorporated (Wilmington, Delaware). Unit 1 began commercial operations in July 1990, while Unit 2 began in April 1995. Both units underwent repowering work in 2011, increasing their capacity from 675 MW to the current 810 MW.
Laguna Verde is one of four operation nuclear power facilities in Latin America. The other three are Argentina's Atucha (335 MW) and Embalse (648 MW), and Brazil's Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant (also known as Angra NPP), which has two reactors: Angra I (640 MW) and Angra II (1,350 MW). A third unit (1,350 MW) is under construction at Angra, which should begin operations in 2018.
Also, a second unit (745 MW) at Atucha is in the final commissioning stage and is expected to begin full operation in the coming months.
