Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 4 of Shangdu power plant's Phase II went into commercial operation 10 months ahead of schedule on November 10, 2007, after passing its 168-hour full-load trial in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The unit was built by North United Power Company Limited (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia), a holding subsidiary of China Huaneng Group (Beijing).

Shangdu Power Plant is located in the Xilinguole grassland in Inner Mongolia. The power plant was furnished with four 600-megawatt (MW) direct air-cooled subcritical coal-fired units in Phase I and Phase II. Two subcritical coal-fired units in Phase I were put into commercial operation in August last year. Unit 3 in Phase II was successfully commissioned in August 2007.

Electricity generated from the project is directly supplied to the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan power grid. The completion of the project promotes safety and reliability of the Beijing-Tainjin-Tangshan power grid, as well as secures the power supply for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

On November 11, 2007, Unit 3 of the Huaneng Yuhuan power plant successfully passed its 168-hour full-load trial and went into commercial operation in eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

Four 1,000-MW ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units are planned for the Huaneng Yuhuan power plant. The project is a carrier for the localization of manufacturing technology for ultra supercritical coal-fired units in the nation's "863 program," which aims to expand the use of advanced technology in China, and it is also one of the first power plants in China to have a 1,000-MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired unit.
