Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Canadian cleantech company Enerkem Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec) is entering the final stages of completing its much-anticipated commercial-scale waste-to-biofuels facility in Edmonton, Alberta.
The project, announced in mid-2008, that turns municipal solid waste into biofuels, was set to launch commercial-scale production in 2012. After construction delays, funding issues and supplier and subcontractor lawsuits, the project is overdue and over-budget.
However, good news for the project is on the horizon, as Enerkem's certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system for biomethanol production and fuel ethanol production of 36 million liters per year is expected later this fall.
Papillon & Fils Ltée (Trois-Rivières, Québec) is expected to deliver the final pre-fabricated production modules that convert the biomethanol into ethanol, and one of the suppliers will make the final module tie-ins during a three-month shutdown during the fourth quarter of this year.
Once the plant goes online in early 2017, it will have the capacity of converting some 100,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per year into biofuel.
With commercial-scale production in site, the company is now cueing a possible future initial public offering (IPO) launch. A dual listing on both the U.S. and Canadian stock markets is an option for launch.
The process and technology of converting municipal solid waste to biofuels is still in its infancy, and funding construction of these second-generation plants will continue to be a challenge. Additional projects using waste-to-biofuels are being developed by SG Preston Company (Van Wert, Ohio and Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Patriot Energy of Ohio LLC (Hudson, Ohio).
