Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enerkem Incorporated (NASDAQ:NRKM) (Montreal, Quebec) expects to complete construction on an $80 million waste-to-biofuels plant at the Advanced Energy Research facility in Edmonton, Alberta, by this summer.
Construction on the pilot plant was completed in March 2010, and the company held a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2010 to mark the beginning of construction on the $80 million commercial-scale plant. The plant will receive 100,000 tons of municipal solid waste through a 25-year agreement with the city of Edmonton. The waste will be gasified to produce 36 million liters (10 million gallons) per year of second-generation fuel ethanol.
The facility will be located adjacent to the City of Edmonton Waste Management Center in Edmonton. It will begin commercial operations by late 2011.
Enerkem also has plans to construct additional facilities in Montreal, Quebec and Pontotoc, Mississippi. Construction of additional facilities most likely will not start until the 2014 calendar year, after the company starts its first-commercial scale plant in Edmonton.
