Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Enerkem Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec) has begun production at its much-anticipated commercial-scale waste-to-biofuels facility in Edmonton, Alberta. The project, which was first announced in mid-2008, was set to launch commercial-scale production in 2012, but ran into construction delays, funding issues and supplier and subcontractor litigation.
Enerkem received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) in mid-2016 for biomethanol production and fuel ethanol production of the 36 million liters per year. The plant has the capacity to converting some 100,000 tonnes per year of municipal solid waste into biofuel.
Papillon & Fils Ltée (Trois-Rivières, Québec) delivered the final pre-fabricated production modules, which convert the biomethanol into ethanol; a supplier made the final module tie-ins during a three-month shutdown in fourth-quarter 2016.
Enerkem is also looking to build its first U.S. plant, which would use the same technology deployed in Edmonton. The company is eying a site in Rosemount, Minnesota, for a new plant that is expected to process 400,000 tons per year of municipal solid waste into 40 million gallons per year of advanced waste-to-ethanol biofuels.
