Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 5 of Northern United Power Company Limited's (NUPC) (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia) Shangdu Power Plant successfully passed the 168-hour full-load trial operation on August 18. The 660-megawatt (MW) supercritical unit of Shangdu Power Plant's Phase III Expansion Project was put into commercial operation on schedule.

So far, the total installed capacity of Shangdu Power Plant has reached 3,720 MW. The commissioning of the project would help alleviate the supportive function of Shangdu Power Plant in the north passage of the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan Grid, and will reduce the current power shortage in the North China Power Grid, China Huaneng Group (Beijing) announced on August 22.

The Shangdu Power Plant, located in Shangdu Town, Zhenglan Qi, Xilin Gol, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is a key coal-fired power plant in China. The power plant will have eight 600-MW coal-fired units, which will be constructed in phases.

The 1,200-MW Phase I portion of the project began in July 2003 and began operations in late 2006. Phase I was funded by Inner Mongolia Mengdian Huaneng Thermal Power Corporation Limited (IMMHTPC) (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia) (SHA:600863) (51%), a public listed subsidiary of NUPC, and Beijing Energy Investment Holding Company Limited (Beijing) (49%).

The 1,200-MW Phase II construction, jointly invested by IMMHTPC (51%) and Beijing International Power Development & Investment Company Limited (Beijing) (49%), was commissioned in August and November 2007.

The 1,200-MW Phase III expansion of NUPC's Shangdu Power Plant will be furnished with two 660-MW supercritical coal-fired units, requiring a total investment of about $850 million. NUPC, a subsidiary of China Huaneng Group, is responsible for the development of the project. Pre-stage preparation of the project kicked off in 2007. Site preparation began in 2008, but the project didn't receive final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) until the beginning of this year.
