Huaneng Shangdu Coal-Fired Power Plant Begins Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The first unit in Phase II (No. 3 Unit) of the Huaneng Shangdu Power Plant passed the 168-hour trial operation and was put into official operation in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on August 31, 2007.

The plant is the only support power source in the north path in the “transmission of power from the west to the east program” in Mongolia and the secure power project for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, invested and built by North United Power Company Limited (Inner Mongolia, China), a company jointly invested by China Huaneng Group (Beijing, China), CITIC Pacific, Limited (Hong Kong, China), China Shenhua Energy Company, Limited (Beijing, China) and Inner Mongolia Power Investment Company, Limited (Inner Mongolia, China). The total planned capacity of the plant is 4,800 megawatts (MW) with eight 600 MW coal-fired units. Construction of the project began August 20, 2004. Two 600 MW subcritical coal-fired units in Phase I were put into operation in August 2006.

Unit No. 3 is a Chinese-made 600 MW direct air-cooled coal-fired unit furnished with the largest lignite boiler, as well as the longest water pipeline (59 kilometers) in China. With the adoption of advanced direct air-cooling technology introduced from SPX, the unit could save 75%-80% in water consumption compared with water-cooled units of the same class. The application of 240-meter high chimneys, electrostatic dust removing systems and low nitrogen combustion technologies makes the power plant environmentally friendly.

As an important “point to grid” power plant in Inner Mongolia, electricity produced from the plant will be transmitted to Beijing-Tainjin-Tangshan power grid via a 500-kilovolt transmission line. The completion of the plant and stable operation has important meaning on the safety and reliability of the Beijing-Tainjin-Tangshan power grid.
