Neste Oil Holds Grand Opening of Europe's Largest Biodiesel Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--This week, Neste Oil Corporation (HEL:NES1V) (Espoo, Finland) held the grand opening ceremony for Europe's largest biodiesel plant, which is located at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

As reported in 2009 (see June 4, 2009, article - Neste Oil Starts Construction on Europe's Largest Biodiesel Plant), the plant took more than two years to complete. The facility has been producing NExBTL biodiesel since September of this year.

The estimated $1 billion-plus plant was built by design-build contractor Technip KTI SpA (Rome, Italy) and can produce 800,000 metric tons, or 1 billion liters, annually of biodiesel from palm oil, rapeseed oil and animal fat waste streams.

The Rotterdam plant is Neste's fourth biodiesel facility and the company's second plant outside of Finland. Neste's first overseas facility, in Singapore, was completed in late 2010. The company operates two renewable diesel plants at the Porvoo Refinery in Finland that came on-stream in 2007 and 2009, and have a combined capacity of 380,000 metric tons per year. With the startup of the Rotterdam refinery, the production capacity of Neste Oil's renewable diesel refineries totals approximately 2 million metric tons annually, which strengthens the company's position as the world's leading renewable diesel producer.
