Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In 2009, approximately 38 new mainline pump and compressor stations will become operational to increase the flow of crude oil and natural gas in the U.S. Some of these new stations will be constructed along existing pipelines, and some will be constructed along new mainline intrastate pipelines. A total of 1,144,318 horsepower will be installed at these stations, giving an average project station size of approximately 30,113 horsepower per station. It is estimated that these new projects carry a total investment value of $1.525 billion, which is approximately $40.13 million per station.
Of the 38 station projects, 22 are natural gas compressor stations valued at $746 million, and the balance of the 16 stations are related to the transmission of crude oil and refined products. At the stations, 178 new units will be installed, giving an average of 4.6 units per station with an average unit size of 6,428.75 horsepower each. Not all of the compressor package unit drive types have been selected yet, although nine will be areoderivative combustion turbines, 45 will be electric motors, 32 will be heavy frame turbines, and 39 will be internal combustion driven compressor packages.
The top five states in terms of defined drives to be installed are Colorado, Illinois, Missouri, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The Rocky Mountain region will receive the most compressor packages with 37 units totaling 159,480 horsepower. The top six drive manufactures of these new units will be Solar Turbines, Caterpillar, Waukesha, Toshiba and GE.
