Shangdu Power Plant Phase III Expansion Receives Approval from NDRC

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 1,320-megawatt (MW) Phase III expansion project for Northern United Power Company Limited's (NUPC) (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia) Shangdu Power Plant received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently, NUPC announced on February 25, 2011.

The Shangdu Power Plant, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is a key coal-fired power plant in China. The power plant will eventually have eight 600-MW coal-fired units, which will be constructed in different phases. Phase I construction entailed the construction of two 600-MW subcritical air-cooling units, jointly invested by NUPC subsidiary Inner Mongolia Mengdian Huaneng Thermal Power Corporation Limited (SHA:600863) (IMMHTPC ) (Hohhot) (51%) and Beijing Energy Investment Holding Company Limited (Beijing) (49%). Construction began in July 2003, and both units were put into operation in late 2006.

In Phase II, two 600-MW subcritical air-cooling units, jointly invested by IMMHTPC (51%) and Beijing International Power Development & Investment Company Limited (Beijing) (49%), were commissioned in August and November 2007 respectively

In Phase III construction, two 660-MW supercritical coal-fired units will be installed at a total investment of about $850 million. The project will also be furnished with particulates removal devices and desulfurization and denitration devices.

Electricity generated from the project will be transmitted to the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan grid by 500-kilovolt transmission lines.
