Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following the successful commissioning of Unit 1 in November 2011, the 1,000-megawatt (MW) Unit 2 of Guohua Xuzhou Power Generation Company Limited's (Xuzhou, Jiangsu) Xuzhou Power Plant successfully completed the first grid connection test on December 17, 2011. The successful completion of the test marks the official start of load testing for the unit, according to Jiangsu Electric Power Construction No.3 Engineering Company Limited (JEPCEC3) (Zhenjiang, Jiangsu), the construction and installation contractor of the project.

Since the overall startup test of the Unit 2 began on November 28, JEPCEC3 has successfully completed a series of test items for the unit, including the second water pressure for the boiler prior to startup, leakage check for the vacuum system and inspection of the thrust-bearing segments for the steam turbine. During the first grid connection, the unit operated stably, and various parameters of the unit were within the normal range. In the next stage, the unit will be entered into the 168-hour full-load trial operation upon the completion of a series of tests according to the contractual stipulation. The unit is expected to be put into commercial operation in mid-January 2012.

Guohua Xuzhou Power Plant, located in the northern suburban of Xuzhou City, was initially built in 1975. Through four phases of expansion, the power plant once owned eight units--four 137.5-MW units and four 220-MW units. In responding to the nation's energy conservation and emissions reduction policy, upon taking over the plant in 2007, China Shenhua Group (Beijing) decided to shut down all eight smaller units to build 6 gigawatts of larger units. Two 1,000-MW units will be built in the initial stage. Units 1 through 6, which had total installed capacity of 990 MW, were shut down in May 2008, which was the largest shutdown ever carried out in China.
