Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Black & Veatch (B&V) (Overland Park, Kansas) is performing design work and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services on nearly $32 billion in projects, according to Industrial Info's project database, including more than $5.7 billion worth that are expected to begin construction and nearly $6.9 billion worth that are expected to end construction in 2018. Most of the projects nearing or under construction are in the Power Generation Industry.

Nearly two-thirds of the $32 billion in total investment value is attributed to natural gas-related projects. The largest under construction include:
  • Tenaska Incorporated's (Omaha, Nebraska) $780 million Westmoreland County Generation Station in Smithton, Pennsylvania, a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) facility that will use a pair of Mitsubishi combustion turbines and a Siemens steam turbine; see project report
  • Arizona Public Service Company's (Tempe, Arizona) $660 million gas turbine addition at the Ocotillo Power Station in Tempe, Arizona, which will install five General Electric (NYSE:GE) combustion turbines; see project report
  • Public Service Enterprise Group's (NYSE:PEG) (PSEG) (Newark, New Jersey) $650 million Unit 7 addition at the Sewaren Generating Station in Sewaren, New Jersey, which is expected to add 540 MW of generation through a combustion and a steam turbine from GE; see project report
Earlier this month, B&V was named EPC Contractor of the Year at the LNG USA Summit 2018 in Houston. It is one of several EPC companies attached to Pembina Pipeline Corporation's (NYSE:PBA) (Calgary, Alberta) massive, $10 billion Jordan Cove LNG Liquefaction Plant in Coos Bay, Oregon, which is expected to comprise five trains, each with a capacity of 200 million standard cubic feet per day of liquefied natural gas (LNG). B&V also is attached to Exelon Corporation's (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois) Annova LNG Liquefaction Plant in Brownsville, Texas, which would comprise six trains with a total output of 6 million metric tons per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Jordan Cove and Annova's first phase, second phase and third phase.

B&V also served as the EPC contractor on four solar power plants from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) that recently began operations:
  • $161 million Blue Cypress Solar Energy Center in Vero Beach, which generates 74.5 MW from 338,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels; see project report
  • $133 million Loggerhead Solar Energy Center in Port Saint Lucie, which generates 74.5 MW from 330,000 PV panels; see project report
  • $116 million Barefoot Bay Solar Energy Center in Melbourne, which generates 74.5 MW from 330,000 PV panels; see project report
  • $116 million Hammock Solar Energy Center near LaBelle, which generates 74.5 MW from 330,000 PV panels; see project report
FPL said in a press release that the four new solar plants couple solar and battery-storage technology that "has the potential to harness millions of kilowatt-hours of solar energy a year that would normally be lost, and improve the predictability of solar energy, which naturally fluctuates with the sun's availability."

Solar also plays a role in a project B&V is developing for the U.S. Marine Corps: a $20 million microgrid and its $17 million backup plant at Miramar Air Station Base in San Diego, California. The grid will utilize a 3.2-MW landfill gas energy plant and existing 1.3-MW PV and rooftop solar systems, while the backup plant will feature a 4-MW diesel generator set, a 3-MW natural gas generator set, a central controller station and other equipment to generate 7 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the microgrid and backup plant.
