Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Environmental Resources Management Group (ERM) (London, England) has its hands full with the growth in U.S. energy-development projects and the recovering mining industry. The contractor--which focuses on environmental-compliance issues throughout the project-development process--is helping to develop facilities across multiple industries, led by a massive U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export project. Industrial Info is tracking about $16.75 billion in active projects involving ERM.

AttachmentClick on the image at right for a graph detailing ERM's active U.S. projects, by industry sector.

ERM is the environmental consultant on one of the largest, most closely watched projects on the U.S. Gulf Coast: Tellurian Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TELL) (Houston, Texas) Driftwood LNG project in Louisiana, which was granted a key authorization from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in May. Tellurian plans to construct five trains, each of which will produce 5.2 million metric tons per year of LNG for export. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report on the first train, and May 23, 2019, article - Tellurian Locks in Key Approvals, Support for Driftwood LNG Project and Major Gas Pipelines.

While the Driftwood project easily dominates ERM's project slate, the consultant is lending its services to nearly $1 billion worth of other projects, including Sendero Midstream Partners LP's (Houston, Texas) Gateway Pipeline, which is expected to finish major construction later this summer. The 24-mile line is split almost evenly between a $22.5 million segment starting in Eddy County, New Mexico, and a $22.5 million segment terminating in Van Horn, Texas. It is expected to transport up to 400 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas extracted from and processed in the Permian Basin.

FERC issued an environmental approval for both segments earlier this year. Sendero Midstream announced in May that it plans to invest $750 million over the next five years to develop upstream and midstream facilities in the Permian Basin. Sendero aims to expand its gas-gathering and processing system with four additional plants, as well as pipelines and compression systems, to handle what it expects will total more than 1 billion cubic feet per day of produced natural gas. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the New Mexico and Texas segments.

In neighboring Arizona, ERM is playing key roles in two projects to bolster the area's mining capacity. Resolution Copper Mining LLC, a joint venture between Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:RIO) (London, England) and BHP Billiton plc (NYSE:BHP) (Melbourne, Australia), has been at work on its estimated $80 million demolition and reclamation project at the Magma Copper Mine in Superior, Arizona, since early 2005, with ERM managing the demolition activities. Late last year, Resolution and ERM tore down a 94-year-old smelter stack that had been deemed unsafe as part of a cleanup and stabilization effort, to make way for a new copper mine at the property. The facility was previously owned by Magma Copper Company, which closed its doors in 1996. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

About 200 miles to the west, near the border with California, ERM is serving as a permitting consultant on Kerr Mines Incorporated's (Toronto, Ontario) estimated $22.7 million gold-mine restart and leach plant addition at its Copperstone Mine in Quartzsite, Arizona. Kerr, which sold off its remaining properties in Ontario last year to focus on the project, hopes to restart and expand the underground mine, which was closed in 2013, to extract 38,000 ounces per year of gold. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

ERM also is proving consultation to Kodiak Electric Association Incorporated (Kodiak, Alaska) for its estimated $50 million water diversion project near Terror Lake on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Kodiak Electric is building two embankment dams, connected by a man-made channel and a subterranean tunnel, near an existing hydroelectric power station. The dams are expected to increase water flow to Terror Lake and the station's generators. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Not all of ERM's projects involving energy development or mining. Fritz Egger GmbH & Company's (Sankt Johann, Austria) $700 million particleboard mill in Lexington, North Carolina, has been under construction since December, with ERM as consultant. Egger plans to bolster its position in the U.S. wood-product market with the 4.5 million-square-foot plant, which the company says will purchase its wood byproducts from sawmills in and around North Carolina.
