Peabody Plans to Close Indiana Coal Mine this Fall, an Industrial Info Market Brief
Peabody Energy Corporation will close its Somerville Central coal mine in Gibson County, Indiana, before the end of the year. The company cited poor market conditions as a reason for the closure. Most of the mine's employees may be offered positions at the company's nearby mines. A small number of employees will remain onsite to oversee the closure and reclamation process.
The surface mine produced 2 million tons of coal last year. The reclamation process will begin shortly after the closing.
