Peabody Energy Corporation will close its Somerville Central coal mine in Gibson County, Indiana, before the end of the year. The company cited poor market conditions as a reason for the closure. Most of the mine's employees may be offered positions at the company's nearby mines. A small number of employees will remain onsite to oversee the closure and reclamation process. The surface mine produced 2 million tons of coal last year. The reclamation process will begin shortly after the closing.
