Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--U.S. dry natural gas production hit a record high for a second year in a row in 2018, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The increase is driven by the growing use of domestically produced gas as an energy feedstock, and the rising global appetite for liquefied natural gas (LNG). Both factors have something in common: They need pipelines to carry the gas from the fields to power plants or processing facilities. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $8 billion worth of natural gas pipelines that are set to begin construction before the end of this year.

Domestic dry natural gas production increased 12% to 28.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2018, according to the EIA. The surge in production is altering the U.S.'s position as both a buyer and seller of energy: More than 90% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. in 2018 was produced domestically, reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy sources, while the EIA predicts U.S. export capacity for LNG will reach 8.9 billion cubic feet per day by the end of 2019. The latter is one reason why the International Energy Agency (IEA) expects the U.S. to join China as one of the world's two biggest LNG exporters within five years.

July saw a monthly record for natural gas deliveries to U.S. LNG production and export facilities at 6 billion cubic feet per day, or 7% of the total U.S. dry natural gas production, according to the EIA's assessment of data from OPIS PointLogic Energy. Venture Global LNG Incorporated is among the companies betting on continued growth: The company is building its estimated $2.5 billion Calcasieu Pass export facility in Cameron, Louisiana, which will comprise five modules, each producing 1 million metric tons per year for global customers such as Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands) and BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England), both of which have signed supply agreements.

Calcasieu Pass will be supplied by an estimated $75 million gas pipeline, carrying up to 2 billion cubic feet per day nearly 24 miles from a station in Grand Chenier, Louisiana. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the export facility and pipeline.

In the neighboring Lone Star State, Midcoast Energy LLC, a subsidiary of ArcLight Capital Partners (Boston, Massachusetts), is considering the proposed CJ Express Pipeline from Carthage to Hardin County, Texas, which would carry up to 700 million standard cubic feet per day about 150 miles to a connection with the Clarity Pipeline, which runs to processing facilities along the Gulf Coast. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In the Northeastern region, Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (NYSE:CPK) (Dover, Delaware) is expanding its Eastern Shore Pipeline into Pennsylvania with two new segments: a line from Hockessin, Delaware, to the Pennsylvania border, and a line from the border to Honey Brook, Pennsylvania. The segments, which run 55 and 70 miles, respectively, are expected to carry up to 100 million standard cubic feet per day. Both remain in their permitting phases. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Delaware and Pennsylvania segments.
