Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Alternative Fuels Industry is growing and diversifying, both in market presence and public support. But like any other energy sector, its facilities require regular maintenance to ensure efficiency and reliability. Industrial Info is tracking more than 160 maintenance-related projects at alternative fuel facilities across the U.S. that are set to begin construction through the end of June, with ethanol plants accounting for nearly 90%.

AttachmentClick on the image at right for a graph detailing the top 10 U.S. states for alternative-fuel maintenance projects that are set to kick off in the remaining first half of 2020.

Dakota Gasification Company, a subsidiary of Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Bismarck, North Dakota), is proposing the single highest-valued maintenance program: the estimated $5 million turnaround at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant in Beulah, North Dakota, the only U.S. commercial-scale coal-gasification plant. Various units, including a pair of coal-gasification trains and three waste-gas/liquid boilers, are set to undergo routine inspections and repairs.

The facility, which produces 153 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas, is one of seven lignite-based plants in North Dakota. The state's 8% drop in 2019 coal production was attributed largely to major outages at coal-fired power plants and maintenance at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, according to the Associated Press, as well as electricity produced from other sources. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Leading fuel ethanol producer Green Plains Incorporated (NASDAQ:GPRE) (Omaha, Nebraska) has 13 maintenance projects on the books for 2020, more than any other company, although 10 of those projects are valued at less than $1 million each. The other three projects, each valued at about $1 million, involve major inspections and repairs to the 100 million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant in Central City, Nebraska; the 121 million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant in Wood River, Nebraska; and the 120 million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant in Rives, Tennessee.

Green Plains' Nebraska projects are set to kick off in April and wrap up in September and October, respectively; the Tennessee project is set to kick off in March and wrap up in October. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Central City, Wood River and Tennessee projects.

Flint Hills Resources LP, a subsidiary of Koch Industries Incorporated (Wichita, Kansas) is among the busiest alternative fuel producers, preparing to kick off seven maintenance projects before the end of June. Flint Hills is preparing for a series of turnarounds at ethanol plants throughout Iowa, the leading U.S. state for corn production:
  • $1.5 million turnaround in Menlo at 120 million-gallon-per-year plant; see project report
  • $1 million turnaround in Arthur at 110 million-gallon-per-year plant; see project report
  • $1 million turnaround in Fairbank at 120 million-gallon-per-year plant; see project report
  • $500,000 turnaround in Shell Rock at 120 million-gallon-per-year plant; see project report
  • $500,000 turnaround in Iowa Falls at 110 million-gallon-per-year plant; see project report
Pacific Ethanol Incorporated (NASDAQ:PEIX) (Sacramento, California) is looking at turnarounds at nearly all of its major facilities, led by a pair of turnaround programs at its ethanol complex in Pekin, Illinois. The dry and wet milling units--which have capacities of 60 million and 100 million gallons per year, respectively--are set to undergo major inspections and repairs through the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the dry mill and wet mill projects.
