Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Earlier this week, U.S. natural gas futures tumbled to their lowest since August 1995, as the coronavirus cut energy demand after months of mild winter weather had already reduced typical seasonal gas demand. Despite the low prices, Industrial Info is tracking nearly $2.5 billion in natural gas pipeline projects that are slated to be completed in second-quarter 2020 throughout the U.S.

Among the recently completed U.S. pipeline projects is liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer and exporter Cheniere Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:LNG) (Houston, Texas) Midship natural gas pipeline, which runs nearly 200 miles from Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, to interconnects near Bennington, Oklahoma, where it can be delivered to markets on the Gulf Coast and in the Southeast. The pipeline can carry 1.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Construction began in early 2019, with Strike Construction LLC (Spring, Texas) as general contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. This week, Cheniere asked the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) permission to place the pipeline into service as early as possible, but no later than April 17 in order to meet shippers' needs.

U.S. gas pipelines slated for completion in the near future include EQM Midstream Partners LP's (NYSE:EQM) (Canonsburg, Pennsylvania) Hammerhead natural gas gathering pipeline between Pennsylvania and West Virginia, which is meant to provide gas to the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), which will run from West Virginia to Virginia. While the smaller gathering pipeline is approaching completion, the MVP may not fare so well. Construction on the pipeline was suspended last year, and it still lacks some key federal permits to begin again. EQM said it planned to resume construction on the pipeline this spring for completion by the end of the year; however, COVID-19 may hinder that.

According to local new media reports, opponents of the pipeline are saying work crews from other states should not be coming to Virginia and West Virginia during the coronavirus pandemic. In West Virginia, a group has asked Governor Jim Justice to issue a stay that would prevent travelling pipeline crews from entering the state. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Hammerhead and MVP projects.

Other natural gas pipeline projects set for completion this quarter include Williams Companies Incorporated's (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) Phase II and Phase III of the Hillabee Expansion Project on its Transco system in Alabama, which involves the construction of pipeline loops and work at compressor stations, bringing area transportation capacity up to 1 Bcf/d. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Butler, Autauga, Verbena and Rock Springs loops.

Tallgrass Energy LP (NYSE:TGE) (Leawood, Kansas) is wrapping up its Cheyenne Connector project, a 70-mile grassroot pipeline that will move natural gas from the DJ Basin in Colorado to the company's Rockies Express Cheyenne Hub just south of the Colorado-Wyoming border for access to markets throughout the U.S. The pipeline will have an initial capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day and is expandable. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the pipeline and grassroot compressor station.

Jesus Davis, Industrial Info's vice president of Oil & Gas research, doesn't see any pipelines not coming online because of a lack of demand. Davis said, "I don't see any new pipes not coming into service on schedule or being idled. They may not run at full capacity so they could be considered underutilized, but I do not think that startups are in jeopardy--yet."
