Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Argentina is considering a new law aimed at reviving the nation's ailing biofuels sector, which faced nearly complete bankruptcy in 2020. Initial reports suggest that the currently required fuel-mix rates of 10% corn or soybean biodiesel in diesel and 12% corn and sugarcane-based ethanol for gasoline could be reduced to 5% and 10%, respectively, in the wake of the expiry of the existing law in May 2021.

This development comes after Argentina's bioethanol and biodiesel producers experienced the worst year in their history after suffering a 10-month freeze in sales prices, which forced many to close their plants and suspend staff.

Despite this, as reported by ruralnet.com.ar, Luis Zubizarreta, president of the Argentine Chamber of Biofuels (Carbio), has noted that lowering the biofuel fuel-mix rates will be a "hard blow to the industry," as only producers authorized to operate prior to December 31, 2020, would be included in the change, and new subsidiaries would not be able to produce biofuels.
