Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--From January through March, $3.3 billion worth of grassroot power projects across Latin America were completed and began commercial operations, adding 2.98 gigawatts (GW) of newbuild capacity to the region's installed base.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) plants account for 873 megawatts (MW) of the total new-build installed capacity among Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Panama, the leading countries for solar PV development in Latin America. In fact, solar PV represents all 575 MW of new-build capacity that began commercial operations in Brazil during the first quarter.

Combined-cycle units and simple-cycle combustion turbines account for 850 and 744 MW, respectively. These values are attributed to two large projects in Mexico: the 850-MW Energia Valle de Mexico II combined-cycle project in the State of Mexico, and the 744-MW Los Ramones simple-cycle plant in the state of Nuevo Leon. Both initially were planned to be operational in 2020, but commissioning activities were affected by differing resolutions from Mexican authorities to secure grid stability amid the COVID-19 pandemic and to use natural gas a main fuel.

Natural gas leads all other fuels in Latin America by capacity with 1.6 GW, more than half of the grassroot startups in the region. The remaining 531 MW are generated by windfarms (408 MW), hydropower plants (104 MW) and internal combustion engine peaking plants (9 MW).
