Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies have encouraged or required employees to work from home, driving a need for more data access and support. Since March 2020, when states began enforcing social distancing and other pandemic-related measures, Industrial Info has seen a rapid ramp-up in data center construction, totaling more than 120 projects across the U.S., with nearly $30 billion in value.

Among the trends driving the growth in demand are employees working from home, and online orders for grocery, medication and other household items for delivery. As the crisis lingers, the need for data centers will continue to grow.

Facebook is the number one builder of data centers in the U.S. based on the value of projects in the works, with more than $10 billion in activity. Google, NTT Global Data Centers Americas, Pegasus Group, Microsoft, Diode Ventures LLC, Switch Supernap LLC, Apple and Amazon are the largest names in data center construction. One of the largest projects is Pegasus Group's $3 billion data center and 340-megawatt (MW) solar power plant, nicknamed "The Hive," which is under construction in Golden Valley, Arizona. The project has been delayed and the current timeline is in jeopardy. Another large data center project in the works is Diode Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of Black & Veatch, which involves a $2 billion facility in Kansas City. The massive 3-phase 6.75 million-square-foot building complex recently received city hall approval.
