Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In September 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a "green revolution" and said China has set a goal for carbon dioxide emissions to peak and for the country to become carbon-neutral before 2060.

China is the world's largest contributor of CO2 and uses more coal than the rest of the world combined. Coal, whether in coal-fired power plant or during the production of high value-added chemicals via the process of dry distillation or gasification, will produce a large amount of CO2. With the new carbon-reduction plans, people are wondering how China's coal-to-chemicals will reduce emissions.

At present, there are three main measures for these enterprises:
  • Investment and solar and wind power
  • The development of high value-added coal-chemical projects, including improved process technology, higher carbon conversion rates and lower energy consumption
  • The development of hydrogen energy and energy storage
Some coal-to-chemicals projects in China have been suspended because of strict local energy consumption policies. And it is certain that there will be less new coal-to-chemicals projects and more upgrade projects than years before.

IIR is tracking 114 coal-to-chemicals projects in China, valued at more than $65 billion. If you subscribe to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Chemical Processing Database, click here for a list.
