Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Oman's first ethylene plant, owned by the state-run OQ (Muscat, Oman), has delayed its opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The plant, which was set to begin production before the recent announcement, is part of Oman's plans diversify its economy, which depends largely on oil and mineral resources, through large investments in its chemical and petrochemical industries.
The OQ plant is designed to produce 1,918 million pounds per year of ethylene, along with polyethylene, polypropylene, benzene and MTBE.
Industrial Info is tracking 26 capital-spending projects in Oman's chemical and petrochemical industries, worth more than $9.5 billion. The bulk of the investment is in the petrochemical sector, with more than $3.9 billion attributed to eight projects, followed by the plastic/rubber sector, with more than $2.2 billion in four projects.
