Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Virginia's proximity to Washington, D.C., is leading to an influx of data centers in the state. In addition, ambitious renewable energy plans are driving solar power projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $6.2 billion in industrial projects that are under construction in Virginia.
More than $1.2 billion in data center projects are under construction in Virginia. Many of these are ambitious, multi-phase projects, such as COPT Data Center Solutions' (Columbia, Maryland) three-phase project near Sterling, about 30 miles northwest of Washington, with all phases now under construction. Phase I will provide a nearly 212,000-square-foot data hall building. Phase II will provide 216,000 square feet, and Phase III will provide a 14,000-square-foot data hall building. All phases are on track to be completed later this year. Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), which has selected Washington, D.C., for its second headquarters, is underway with Project Brickyard, a data center campus in Manassas, southeast of D.C. Phase I entails the construction of a 211,816-square-foot data center building, with supporting equipment to expand cloud services in the region. The project kicked off in 2019 and will wrap up in coming months. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
Amazon also is underway with a grassroot fulfillment center in Suffolk, Virginia, in the southeast corner of the state. The facility will house 3.8 million square feet. According to the Suffolk News Herald, the robotics fulfillment center will be one of the largest industrial buildings in the state, second in size only to the Pentagon. The project kicked off last year and is expected to be completed in fourth-quarter 2021. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
Virginia also has ambitious renewable energy plans. The state's Clean Economy Act aims for net-zero emissions in the state by 2050 and has declared 16,100 megawatts (MW) of solar power to be "in the public interest." Late last year, Virginia's primary power utility, Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) announced plans for nine solar projects to bring nearly 500 MW of renewable power to the state. Industrial Info is tracking $1 billion in solar projects under construction in Virginia from Dominion and other companies. Among Dominion's projects is the 70-MW Bedford Solar Center near Chesapeake, construction of which kicked off earlier this year. The facility will use more than 244,500 Jinko solar panels on a single-axis tracking system. Construction is expected to wrap up by fourth-quarter 2021. Other notable projects underway in the state include Merck & Company Incorporated's (NYSE:MRK) (Kenilworth, Virginia) expansion of its Gardasil human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine plant in Elkton. Use of the vaccine has been rising, and in 2019, the company announced plans to expand its Gardasil plants in Virginia and neighboring North Carolina. The Virginia project entails building a 120,000-square-foot building addition and a new purification train to expand manufacture of the vaccine. The project kicked off in 2019 and is planned to be completed next year. Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:J) (Dallas, Texas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services.
