Komatsu Limited (Tokyo, Japan) has earned a place as the world's second-largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment after Caterpillar Incorporated (NYSE:CAT) (Deerfield, Illinois). Komatsu is relocating and combining its existing North American headquarters and mining equipment manufacturing facilities in Milwaukee. The project kicked off in 2019, with Hunzinger Construction Company (Brookfield, Wisconsin) as the general contractor. The project entails constructing a 410,000-square-foot manufacturing plant and 176,000 square feet of office space, including a 20,000-square-foot museum. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, some employees will begin working at the facility this fall, although the entire project is not expected to be completed until next year. In Superior Wisconsin, just across the border from Duluth, Minnesota, major upgrades are underway at Cenovus Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:CVE) (Calgary, Alberta) 45,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refinery. Husky Energy kicked off the work in 2019 and Cenovus inherited the project when it acquired Husky earlier this year. The upgrade has several aspects, among them the rebuild of the 38,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) crude and vacuum unit by replacing column internals to increase capacity to 43,000 BBL/d, and the rebuild of the fluid catalytic cracker unit. Last year, work on the project was delayed due to COVID-19, pushing out the anticipated completion date to 2022. The Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry also makes a strong showing in the state, with more than $568 million in projects underway. Among these is the University of Wisconsin's veterinary medicine building addition at its Madison campus. The project, which kicked off recently, includes demolishing three existing buildings and constructing a new three-story, 139,000-square-foot building for the instruction of veterinary medical research. The project is expected to be completed in 2023. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the project report.

The Food & Beverage Industry accounts for more than $500 million of the state's projects that are under construction. Among them is Haribo of America's Incorporated's (Rosemont, Illinois) grassroot gummy candy manufacturing plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, located south of Milwaukee on the shores of Lake Michigan. According to a town website, it will be Haribo's first North American manufacturing facility. The project is the first phase of a four-phase plan and entails constructing a 487,400-square-foot facility, including a three-story candy production facility and an attached two-story office and warehouse. Taking advantage of its location on Green Bay, Marinette Marine Corporation (Marinette, Wisconsin) is expanding its shipyard plant in Marinette. The shipyard manufactures vessels for the U.S. Navy. The project includes constructing a 150,000-square-foot final hull erection and outfitting hall, a paint and blasting facility, along with an expansion of the existing fabrication and panel line building and new shiplift system. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed in 2022. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
