Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial project activity is strong in the Midwest, and at the region's heart, Kansas has more than $3.8 billion in projects under construction. A large $1 billion+ Pharma-Biotech project pushes that industry into a leading position for spending, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing and Power industries.

Easily the largest project underway in Kansas is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan. According to the DHS website, the facility "will be a state-of-the-art biocontainment laboratory for the study of diseases that threaten both America's animal agricultural industry and public health" and will be owned, managed and operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture upon completion. The goal of the NBAF is to conduct research, develop vaccines, diagnose emerging diseases and train veterinarians. The NBAF will contain the nation's first biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory capable of housing cattle and other large livestock to study zoonotic diseases. Construction began in 2015 and is expected to be completed next year. A large wind power project also features in the state's project activity in the form of ENGIE SA's (La Défense, France) Iron Star Windfarm near Ford, about 130 miles west of Wichita. The facility will use 84 4.8-megawatt (MW) turbines to generate approximately 400 MW. Construction started late last year, with Wanzek Construction Incorporated (West Fargo, North Dakota) as project manager, and is expected to wrap up later this year. Distribution and warehousing projects also feature heavily in Kansas' project activity. Among the largest of these facilities is Urban Outfitters Incorporated's (NASDAQ:URBN) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) grassroot distribution center in Kansas City. The 880,000-square-foot facility will feature 60,000 square feet of office space and will help the company, which specializes in apparel, clothing accessories and apartment products geared toward young adults, expand its distribution operations in the region. Construction is expected to be completed in third-quarter 2022. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the project report.

Seemingly no state is complete without at least one project from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and Kansas boasts two that are under construction. In Park City, Amazon is underway with Project Starship, a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center with 100 loading docks. In Kansas City, Amazon is constructing Project Superbowl, which features a 1 million+-square-foot fulfillment center that is expected to be completed next summer. Renewable diesel projects are taking the U.S. by storm, and in Hugoton, Kansas, Seaboard Corporation (Merriam, Kansas) is converting a former ethanol plant to produce 85 million gallons per year of renewable diesel and 8.5 million gallons per year of naphtha from animal fats and vegetable oils. Construction kicked off early last year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services.
