Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial project activity is strong in the Midwest, and at the region's heart, Kansas has more than $3.8 billion in projects under construction. A large $1 billion+ Pharma-Biotech project pushes that industry into a leading position for spending, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing and Power industries.

Easily the largest project underway in Kansas is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan. According to the DHS website, the facility "will be a state-of-the-art biocontainment laboratory for the study of diseases that threaten both America's animal agricultural industry and public health" and will be owned, managed and operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture upon completion. The goal of the NBAF is to conduct research, develop vaccines, diagnose emerging diseases and train veterinarians. The NBAF will contain the nation's first biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory capable of housing cattle and other large livestock to study zoonotic diseases. A large wind power project also features in the state's project activity in the form of ENGIE SA's (La Défense, France) Iron Star Windfarm near Ford, about 130 miles west of Wichita. The facility will use 84 4.8-megawatt (MW) turbines to generate approximately 400 MW.
