Released December 20, 2021 | GALWAY, IRELAND

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--A 200 million euro (US$225 million) project to build a green hydrogen facility and associated windfarm in the county of Mayo, Ireland, has been unveiled by Mercury Renewables (Foxford, Ireland).

The Firlough project will consist of an onsite windfarm that will power a 75-megawatt (MW) hydrogen electrolysis plant capable of producing enough green hydrogen from water to fuel 1,000 fuel cell heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), alongside agricultural machinery, buses, construction plants and trains. It would cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 65,000 tonnes a year--roughly 2% of Ireland's transport emissions target. Renewable energy from the associated windfarm also will be capable of powering up to 45,000 homes.

Industrial Info is tracking three related projects, including one for a 50-MW battery energy storage (BESS) unit and a separate storage facility capable of storing 3-6 days worth of hydrogen. Mercury Renewables had previously received planning permission for a 21-turbine windfarm in the location but has decided to reapply to add the new projects and reduce the number of turbines to 13 more powerful turbines.

Speaking to RTE, chief executive officer John Duffy, said: "This development will contribute significantly to the area and the wider north-west region, contributing to the supply of Ireland's energy needs from Irish sources as we approach an already well publicised challenging period for energy supply especially for industry. Our focus is on decarbonising the transportation sector, however, green hydrogen can also be used to provide baseload renewable energy when the wind isn't blowing."

In June, Industrial Info reported on EI-H2's plan to build Ireland's first green hydrogen facility in Aghada, in County Cork. It plans to invest 120 million euro (US$147 million) to build the 50-megawatt (MW) electrolysis plant, which will be capable of supplying more than 20 tonnes of hydrogen per day to the commercial market. It will use available renewable energy to power the plant. For additional information, see June 8, 2021, article - Ireland's First Green Hydrogen Project Revealed.

Mercury Renewables and EI-H2 join a growing number of energy companies across Europe joining the rush toward hydrogen projects, and the European Union (EU) has ambitious goals and deep pockets to support its rollout. Recently, Industrial Info reported that the EU aims to drive down the costs of producing green hydrogen by more than two-thirds by the end of the decade. At the beginning of this year, more than 200 new hydrogen projects were announced globally--55% of them were in Europe.
