Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) (U.S. Steel) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) said this week it will build a new $3 billion advanced steel mill in Osceola, Arkansas, near its Big River Steel plant.

"We had numerous competitive site options, but Osceola offers our customers incomparable advantages," U.S. Steel Chief Executive Officer David Burritt said in a press release.

The new mill will include two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) with 3 million tons per year of steelmaking capability, an endless casting and rolling line and advanced finishing capabilities. The facility's endless casting and rolling technology will be a first in the U.S., according to the company.

The company said it expects to break ground on the project in first-quarter 2022, with project completion and full operation anticipated in 2024.

Industrial Info has tracked the project since September 2021. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the project report.

In combination with Big River Steel, the new mill will form a 6.3 million-ton-per-year mega mill, the company said. New non-grain-oriented electrical steel and galvalume/galvanizing lines under construction at Big River Steel will further enrich the company's capabilities, it said.

The new Osceola facility will have "abundant, increasingly renewable and clean power" from Entergy Arkansas Incorporated (NYSE:EAI) (Little Rock, Arkansas), U.S. Steel said.

Last year, the steelmaker cancelled a $1.5 billion expansion and modernization project at its Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania, which would have included an endless casting and rolling mill and a 94-megawatt cogeneration plant. At that time, Burritt cited the company's environmental goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 as the main factor in the decision.
