Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority awarded two contracts last week to complete the remaining Galveston Bay segments of the $1 billion Houston Ship Channel expansion projects. The contracts total $430 million in value.

Port Houston is the local sponsor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) project, which will widen the 52-mile channel by 170 feet along its Galveston Bay reach, from 530 feet to 700 feet. It also will deepen some upstream segments to 46.5 feet. The Port Commission awarded the first dredging contract in 2021.
The expansion will allow the port to handle Neo-Panamax container ships that carry up to 15,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The project is targeted for completion in 2025.
Project 11 is 82% funded, and efforts continue to secure the remaining federal funds, the port authority commission said in a June 17 press release.
Port Commission Chairman Ric Campo said one of the contracts awarded last week was the largest ever made by the commission.
The commission approved the staff's recommendation to award Weeks Marine (Cranford, New Jersey) and Curtin Maritime Corporation (Port of Long Beach, California).
The Houston Ship Channel is the busiest waterway in the nation, according to the port authority, which cites the USACE. The waterway has more deep-draft ship visits than any other port in the country, and nearly 200,000 barge transits every year. Port Houston's eight public terminals and more than 200 private facilities have an economic impact of nearly $802 billion in annual activity, according to the port authority.
