Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In a major step forward for the alternative foods movement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agreed with Upside Foods (Berkeley, California) that the startup company's cultivated chicken is safe to eat. This marks the FDA's first completed pre-market consultation for a human food made from cultured animal cells, which avoids the killing of live animals for food production. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$1 billion worth of cell-based meat, poultry and seafood projects in the U.S., and a few more globally.

Upside's cell-based poultry production plant in Emeryville, California, is unlikely to begin construction before early 2024, if the final investment decision is favorable. But executives at the startup were nothing but optimistic, following what they called "a rigorous evaluation" by the FDA.
"We started UPSIDE amid a world full of skeptics, and today, we've made history again as the first company to receive a 'No Questions' letter from the FDA for cultivated meat," said Uma Valeti, the chief executive officer of Upside, in a press release. "This milestone marks a major step towards a new era in meat production."
Upside was founded in 2015 and has long supported federal regulatory oversight of cultivated meat. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Food & Beverage Project Database can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.
"The FDA is ready to work with additional firms developing cultured animal cell food and production processes to ensure their food is safe and lawful under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act," the agency said in a press release. "We are already engaged in discussions with multiple firms about various types of food made from cultured animal cells, including food made from seafood cells that will be overseen solely by the FDA."
Other projects under development across the U.S. include proposed cell-based meat-production plants from Eat JUST Incorporated (Alameda, California) and Future Meat Technologies (Rehovot, Israel), both of which are in their earliest development phases and are undergoing site selection. Cell-based poultry projects already are under construction in other Western nations. Peace of Meat, the Belgium-based subsidiary of Steakholder Foods (NASDAQ:STKH) (Ness Ziona, Israel), recently started construction on a US$3 million plant in Antwerp, Belgium, designed to process 100,000 tons of cell-based poultry per year.
Peace of Meat was acquired in 2021 by Israeli-based cultured meat company MeaTech 3D, itself acquired by Steakholder earlier this year. The project's developers hope to recreate the juiciness and taste of chicken in their product, which traditionally has lacked the feel and flavor of genuine poultry. Cell-based meat projects in Europe include Biotech Foods S.L.'s US$40.74 million plant in San Sebastian, Spain, which is designed to produce 1,000 tons per year of cell-based beef for hamburgers, sausages, meatballs and other foods. Biotech Foods was acquired last year by JBS S.A. (São Paulo, Brazil), which is the world's largest meat-processing company. The project began construction last month, and it is expected to wrap up in the summer of 2024. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.
